5 out of 5 stars Great Fuel for Long Endurance Events   April 21, 2010
Will Murphy (Hollywood, FL United States)

Perpetuem is a powder you mix with water to make a drink that supplies your needs during long endurance events. It contains complex carbs, healthy fats and a small amount of an easily digestible protein, as well as other ingredients to do things like buffer lactic acid.

If you like to mix it really strong (which is what I do; I carry plain water separately) consider the plain flavor, as the original flavor gets a bit sweeter than I like it when made that way. The latte flavor has gotten great reviews, is supposedly good even when not cold, and has a small amount of caffeine. I have not tried that flavor yet so I can't comment on it.

If you have trouble tolerating Perpetuem when running, consider Hammer's Sustained Energy as an option.

One other thing about Hammer -- the customer support is second to none. Their website is replete with information about sports nutrition and their products, and you can get advice from their well-trained staff. They will be happy to discuss your needs.

Perpetuem keeps me cycling on my longer rides (50+ miles). It is a good product.

5 out of 5 stars an endurance athlete's best friend   March 17, 2010

I use this mix on my 5+ hour mountain bike races. No other product comes close to prevent that 3 hour "bonk" - when you just cant do anything and you don't care... that lack of will that doesn't come from your legs, but your entire system. You can just feel the energy when you use it. (I typically start taking it 1 hour into my races). I highly recommend it.

Side note: do not train with this mix (or use 1/2 concentrations). the high calorie content, which makes it great for race day, might not let you shed the pounds as quickly during the training period if you use it all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Great product for thru-hikers   May 9, 2010
Anthony Biegen (Santa Barbara, CA USA)
I bought this product because I was hiking the PCT and was concerned that I would not be able to keep up the daily pace of 20+ miles per day. I used this and Heed. I never felt burned out and never felt ill effects from hiking between 21 and 26 miles each day. I believe that this product really helped.

The taste is slight which for me was what I wanted. Too many sugary sports drinks overwhelm you with artificial flavors. This one I find very pleasant.

4 out of 5 stars Works well, tastes like mud   September 11, 2007

It's a fuel-drink, so I didn't expect this to taste great. They call it orange-sicle, but it's really, really bland. Not such a big deal to me, because when you need this kind of endurance fuel, you need to have realistic expectations for flavor (my opinion, anyway).

I used this for the triple bypass ride this summer (120 miles, 10,000 feet of climbing). It did the job just fine. I needed to supplement electrolytes but I'm a 'white-streak' sweater so I burn through salt like crazy. Still, I needed it to keep me going for about 8 hours and it did.
